Introduction

Le Folauga... the past coming forward
Contemporary Pacific Art from Aotearoa New Zealand

'Le Folauga represents the past, the present and the future. It means the voyage and the changes that occur along the way. It shows the movement towards the future and traveling in the direction of the current. Le Folauga has the sense of a flotilla moving together and forward.'
Johnny Penisula

Le Folauga brings together sixteen Pacific artists who work with painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation. Many have had substantial experience in presenting their work in exhibitions both within New Zealand and internationally. Their artworks on display here indicate that while traditional Polynesian design motifs inform some of these works, the varieties of both media and visual style reveals the diverse and energetic nature of their creative vision.

Since the 1980s, many Pacific artists have been developing their artistic vocations in Aotearoa New Zealand. Professional careers as practicing artists and as teachers have now become common. Senior artists such as Fatu Feu'u and Johnny Penisula have mentored the younger generation. Such collective processes of inter-generational support are occurring throughout New Zealand's community of Pacific artists.

Bottled Ocean was the first group exhibition to profile Pacific artists living in New Zealand, curated by Jim Vivieaere in 1994. That touring exhibition was influential for many people as it publicly revealed the extensive talent in the Pacific visual art scene. Le Folauga reveals the extensive evolution happening within contemporary Pacific art by representing a diverse group of New Zealand based artists. Their artwork is some of the most vital and expressive being created in New Zealand. This project is the first group exhibition focussing on Pacific artists resident in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Le Folauga –
